The Three Definitions of Health

A healthy life is characterized by physical, mental, and social well-being, not just the absence of disease. The concept of health was first put forth by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1948. The constitution states that “health is the state of complete physical and mental well-being.” The writers of the constitution were aware that the human condition is often dependent on the presence of disease, but also wanted a more inclusive view of health.


The WHO’s definition of health in 1948 defined health as the absence of disease. The biopsychosocial model integrates social, psychological, and environmental components into a single concept. A third definition of health needs to incorporate the individual and the scales of values that determine our health. A person’s ability to manage his or her life is more important than their disease status, and if he or she is experiencing chronic pain, they’re likely to seek treatment. It’s important to realize that the medical definition of health is not enough for the modern world.

Although it’s not yet clear how to define health, it has a high symbolic value and should be treated with caution.
