The Importance of Defining Healthy Living

Health is a condition of mental, physical and emotional well-being where infirmity and illness are absent. It is the sum total of all the needs of the body, mind and spirit, with the idea of getting optimum health being an individual’s topmost priority. The concept of health has long been recognized as the one factor that separates the weak from the strong. This idea is what underpins the concept of health maintenance and the way to maintain health, with the importance of good health being seen as a basic right of citizens.

The concept of health has been around for many years now. The evolution of society has contributed to its widespread awareness and acceptance. The modern technology that is available to us has only helped to intensify the level of awareness regarding health. There is also widespread societal acceptance of health determinants like nutrition and exercise that have helped to raise the awareness levels regarding health conditions. Most of us believe that having a strong physique helps to ensure good health, which in turn is the key to success and employment opportunities.

Chronic diseases are those that require regular monitoring and treatment in order to control or prevent further complications. These diseases include high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, diabetes and heart disease. People who suffer from any of these health conditions need to engage in preventative measures in order to keep themselves at optimum health. This can be done through a healthy diet and a regular exercise routine. A healthy diet includes a high intake of fruits and vegetables and the recommended daily intake of calcium and vitamin D to counter vitamin D deficiency.

Emotional well-being on the other hand refers to one’s capacity to enjoy life despite one’s physical health status. It is associated with the ability to manage stress and cope with everyday demands. People with mental illness tend to have lower levels of well-being because they have difficulty managing their emotions and stresses. They are more likely to experience negative thinking, negative feelings and high anxiety levels, which can have negative effects on both their mental health and their physical health.

A combination of both physical and mental health can lead to optimal overall health and a longer lifespan. While physical health can improve through regular exercise and a balanced diet, it is important to note that a healthy diet alone will not prevent or improve chronic diseases. It is also important for people with mental illness to make lifestyle changes, such as limiting alcohol and tobacco use, avoiding risky behaviors such as drinking and driving, and taking medication as necessary to treat their disorder. People with mental illness should also seek treatment for their condition as well as participate in wellness programs that promote physical health.

The developed countries are still developing strategies to promote good health for all. However, it is evident that there is a growing concern for promoting physical well-being and defining health at its basic level. More experts are recognising the need for a multifaceted approach to promoting better lifestyle choices, including diet, physical activity and stress management, in addition to promoting prevention of chronic diseases like cancer and diabetes. In light of these developments, a definition of health has become an important first step in promoting better health for all.
