WHO’s Definition of Health Is Outdated
The WHO defines health as the absence of disease or incapacity. According to the most recent Massachusetts State Health Assessment, genetics make up only 15 percent of health. The other 75 percent of health is determined by social determinants. These factors affect people’s health and communities, and are shaped by the money, power, and resources that govern our society. Often, these factors are the result of policies and institutions created by wealthy individuals.
Generally, WHO defines health as the state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being. It involves preventing and treating disease, as well as maintaining social, emotional, and mental resources. The term is also used to describe the capacity to cope with daily stresses. It is an important part of the overall quality of life. But not everyone shares the same definition of health. In fact, the WHO’s definition of health is outdated. A more useful definition of health involves the ability to manage a person’s life and cope with stress.
WHO’s constitution came into force on April 7, 1948. It states that “health is the state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being” and that it includes disease-free living. The authors of this document were aware that we tend to think of health as the absence of illness, but they emphasized that “health is also an aspect of a person’s ability to cope with stress and live independently.” A better definition of health, as Huber et al. note, involves the individual’s ability to adapt to changing circumstances and make wise choices.
A complete health view of health is counterproductive. Almost no one can be completely healthy at all times. This approach is unattainable for most people. It fails to take into account the social, emotional, and psychological components of disease. Moreover, it is an over-simplistic view of health that contributes to overmedicalisation of society. It is therefore critical to understand how our definition of health can benefit our lives and our daily living.
A complete health model emphasizes a person’s physical and mental capabilities. Its goal is to promote the overall well-being of a community. This requires a holistic approach, integrating social, mental, and physical factors. In addition, a full health model must include social and psychological components. These components must be considered in every area of a community. A comprehensive health approach ensures a community is healthy, both mentally and physically.
