Sports (or physical sports) is any form of generally competitive physical action that, through organised or casual competition, attempt to use, develop or enhance physical skill and ability while also providing entertainment for participants, and occasionally, spectators. While the development and maintenance of athletic ability has long been the aim of many sportspeople, it is also the pursuit of status and distinction within a group or community that motivates many people to take part in sporting activities. It is also the pursuit of social status. Sports may involve contact sports, such as wrestling or boxing, or more passive games, such as golf or softball. Most sports will involve some degree of striking or use of the head and body; while contact sports may even involve throwing or running, while those played less directly may include gymnastics or dance.

The physical activity of sports has evolved significantly over the years to include more definite strategies, equipment, coaching and competition. Sports can be broadly classified into two main areas: motor sport and non-motor sport. Motor sport typically refers to sprinting, cycling, racing and skateboarding; non-motor sport can include tennis, table tennis, swimming, badminton, judo, basketball, golf, sailing and hockey. As compared to other physical activities, sports have developed largely as a competition event to be won by individual competitors. While earlier sportsmen and sportswomen engaged in simple activities such as hunting, fishing and trapping, today, many athletes compete in multiple competitions including running, walking, climbing, swimming and boxing. A popular sport amongst youths is often soccer, which requires players to run, dribble and shoot.

The physiological changes associated with participation in sports, whether they are physically competitive or not, facilitate a wide range of changes in the nervous system, muscles and tissues of the body. These changes occur as a result of the intense physical stimulation and stress that characterize most sports. Sports can be broadly categorized as either an athletic pursuit or a leisure pursuit, with each of them requiring specific skills. Athletes engage in sports that require their use of physical strength, speed, stamina, flexibility and agility; whereas, the enthusiasts play sports that foster their use of skills other than the former.

Common sports like racing, golf and tennis are considered to be recreational pursuits; whereas, hockey, swimming, wrestling and gymnastics are considering to be athletic pursuits. Professional sports involve team sports where several individuals participate on an equal playing field; for instance, football, baseball and basketball. The participants in such sports may utilize different types of equipment and perform different types of physical movements. Other common sports that involve an athletic component are track and field, wrestling, boxing and softball.

Basketball, baseball and tennis are some of the most popular sports in the United States, especially among teenagers. Sports are so popular because they provide a physical challenge that developing the motor skills required to succeed in life; moreover, they offer an outlet for people to socialize, form relationships and compete. As an upperclassman at a state university or college, you may have participated in the following sports: volleyball, softball, soccer, track and field, basketball, table tennis, wrestling and baseball. In addition, middle schools and high schools offer sports for students who participate in after-school sports programs or as part of a physical education curriculum.

As a student athlete, it is imperative to develop your motor skills, agility and physical endurance to stay in shape and to build muscles. Many athletes report that the intensity of their sports dramatically affects the development of their motor skills. Furthermore, many athletes also report the need to improve their sports performance in order to excel at their sport. Therefore, it makes sense to find a sport activity that will not only help you to excel at your sport, but will also help you develop your motor skills, agility and physical endurance.
