The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as a state of physical, mental, and social wellbeing. While we are all striving for a ‘perfect health’ state, the reality is that few people will achieve this ideal all the time. This approach is counterproductive, as it fails to recognize chronic illnesses and disabilities and contributes to an over-medicalised society. Instead, we should focus on promoting the ability to adapt and thrive, as these attributes are important for overall health.
A common misinterpretation of health has been the belief that a person can achieve ‘complete health’ by simply being disease free. While this notion is appealing, it is unrealistic and often counterproductive. The absence of disease in its most basic form means that there is no such thing as ‘complete health’. Moreover, it fails to take account of the fact that many people experience chronic illnesses, disabilities, and other factors that contribute to their overall well-being.
In 1948, the WHO’s definition of health was based on the absence of diseases. However, this is no longer an adequate definition of health. Few people will have total health all the time, and in fact, the definition of ‘complete health’ is often counterproductive. The concept is incompatible with our current understanding of what constitutes ‘complete health’, as it fails to take into account disabilities and chronic illnesses, and it contributes to an over-medicalized society.
A more realistic definition of health is a better understanding of the concept of wellness. A person is healthy if he or she is physically and emotionally healthy. A person who is mentally and socially healthy is in good physical and mental well-being. This is why the World Health Organisation’s definition of ‘complete health’ is not useful. Rather, the term should be interpreted differently. It does not mean that a person is ‘completely well’. It simply means that the person is not sick and not suffering from any type of disease or disability.
The definition of ‘health’ is a crucial part of a country’s constitution. A healthy population can have a higher quality of life. This is an important factor in ensuring that the population has the necessary resources to live. A healthier population can contribute to society and improve the lives of those around them. This is the foundation of a strong society. If we’re not healthy, we will not be able to survive in the world we live in.
